European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
