This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
